The weather outside is headed towards frightful!

We are under a Winter Storm Warning.

1 inch forecast for today.

6-12 inch forecast for overnight/tomorrow.

Frightful!

Extra wood, snowshoes, shovel…at the ready!

We’ve already passed the 1 inch forecast.

Midday break in front of the fire…

But, out we go again!

Gah!!

Where did Bear go?

Following the path of least resistance…

Bear on Beardog Point.

Snow Bear.

Auggie is not interested in Beardog Point.

In and out.

Headed toward frightful!

Fog

No sooner had Margaret asked about fog at my house…

FOG!

Damp, dreary, fog.

All day.

Fog.

Wild Thing: Bright and Shiny!

That might be an exaggeration, but the temperature was above freezing, most of the snow was gone and the forecast was for colder temperatures so I decided that this was my chance to get the road dirt and ice melt chemicals off the motorhome before they had a chance to do damage.

I have an adapter for my kitchen faucet that allows me to hook my hose (garden hose) to it and have warm water. I used that to fill the hose with warm water, thus making the COLD hose easy to work with vs a cold non-cooperative hose.

Once the hose was warmed up, I re-connected it to the outside spigot which has LOTS of pressure and rinsed off Wild Thing and her undercarriage and her newly installed propane tank!!

Whilst undergoing this operation, it was raining. It was 37F. I hope that the folks that pulled into the new construction project did not see the crazy person “washing” a motorhome…in the rain…at barely above freezing temperatures.

Oh, well.

There was no soap involved and it was not really a wash, it was just a rinse off of the worst of the road dirt and ice melt chemicals.

But she looks much better.

Meanwhile…

Yep, not much snow left.

And it is raining.

Auggie played in the garage.

And that hose is the hose that rinsed Wild Thing… drained and coiled neatly awaiting Spring-Summer.

Woo!

It was a workout.

Everyone is so tired that a nap was in order!!

And then…

AND THEN!!!

It started “slushing”. It looked liked snow in the air, but it was slush on the ground.

“REALLY???”

Really.

Playing in water…

Snow

Mama, there is a LOT of snow!

Srsly…a lot.

whoo-boy.

See all that snow on the chairs ???

Testing…

Where Bear goes, Auggie goes!

Snow cat!

Deep snow for the Auggie-cat.

Ok, that’s better – a shoveled spot.

Even better…the DREAM machine…more on it tomorrow.

Yada, yada, yada…throw another log on the fire will ya ?!!?

The local vegetables…and the weather

Vegetables and the weather…not things you’d think go together.

They don’t. Well, except what bad weather does to things in gardens…

So, Veg: tomatoes, beets and cabbage figure prominently in last and this week’s menus.

As noted 2 weeks ago when I bought the last of the Farmer’s market tomatoes…I ate what I could and processed the rest into sauce. I used some of the sauce and then decided I needed to freeze what was left.

I’d seen a blurb on using paper cups – vs ice cube trays (too small) or flat zips (good!) and decided to give the cups a try. I found paper cups with no wax or other “stuff”. Hopefully, I can peel off the cups, dump the 3 oz of tomato sauce in a pan, slowly heat and “Bob’s your Uncle” – the perfect bit of tomato sauce for 1!!

The freezing part went fine. The peeling and thawing and use…to be cont’d at a later date.

Next up is the beets.

When I bought the beets, I also bought some spicy sprouts. I LOVE a sandwich of beets, goat cheese and sprouts on my own rustic seed bread.

But, browsing beet salad recipes…so as to also use the greens…

Anyway, I ended up mashing several recipes to make a roast beet galette: beets, caramelized onions, capers, HORSERADISH! and goat cheese and my own Brioche dough for the “crust”.

Kind of pretty.

Kind of beautiful and VERY delicious. I had 2/3 for supper and the other 1/3 for a breakfast.

Yum.

On to the cabbage.

Still enjoying cabbage salads, but an experiment is ongoing this week.

Sauerkraut in the making…details after fermentation is complete.

So much for the vegetables…now for the weather!

After a September that couldn’t decide whether to be summer, fall or one occasion winter…October starts decidedly and beautifully Fall!
